Agatha All Along: Episode 5 Review

Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power

The Salem Seven have made their way onto the Witches’ Road and are chasing the coven. Agatha Harkness has to face her own mother. The coven loses another member while the witches admit to their lust for power. And the Teen may have revealed his identity.

The Salem Seven

Lilia starts having visions of the Salem Seven entering the Witches’ Road and rallies the coven to get going before they catch up. Rio reveals the Salem Seven are the children of Agatha’s old coven from Salem who became feral after Agatha killed them by absorbing their power. This leads to the coven having to create brooms despite their clear hatred of the idea. They hate how it’s a commercialized aspect of their culture while making women look domestic.

Still, they take to the skies in a scene that looks eerily similar to the speeder bike scene in Return of the Jedi. It’s clearly a green screen with scenes zooming past them, but it works for this low budget offering. It’s both cheesy and wonderful. The Teen gets to make a broom like he’s part of the coven and they manage to escape to the next trial but not before crashing through one of the members of the Salem Seven.

Punish Agatha

Once inside the house for the trial, the coven looks like they are attending an 80s sleepover. The coven gathers around a Ouija board where they learn who they must summon. At first, it seems like they are summoning Mrs. Hart who died on the road (full disclosure: I thought it spelled Mr. Shart at first), but it’s revealed that Agatha is faking being possessed. But the coven actually follows the instructions and summons Agatha’s mother.

This leads to scenes very reminiscent of horror films like The Ring, Poltergeist and the Grudge. Agatha climbs all over the room and contorts her body until they know the ghost of her mother is there. This is where the coven truly changes. Rio has long been about nearly attacking Agatha until Agatha’s mother appears. That’s when Rio gets defensive. Meanwhile, the rest of the coven starts to turn on Agatha.

Eventually, Alice has to use her powers on Agatha while she’s possessed by her mother and that leads to Agatha draining Alice of her power. The Teen returns to the Ouija board where he reads the name Nicholas Scratch, the name of Agatha’s son. This reveals he is not her son as everyone can hear him say it, and leads Agatha to stop draining Alice’s powers, a little too late.

Alice and Teen

Alice dies from Agatha’s actions leading to major issues within the coven. Rio stays with Alice’s body which makes me think she is actually Death as she will likely guide Alice’s body to the next life. Meanwhile, Agatha escapes out the door and realizes that she has regained her powers. Jen and Lilia resign to the fact they, like Agatha, would do anything to regain their powers and can’t blame her for taking her shot. But this leads to righteous indignation from Teen.

Teen’s anger about what the coven has become leads to Agatha starting to regain her villainous temperament from WandaVision. It’s clear she thinks she knows who Teen is and taunts him with the line “You’re so much like your mother.” This pushes Teen over the edge and his hands and eyes start glowing blue. It becomes obvious he’s controlling Jen and Lilia as they throw Agatha off the road and she sinks into quicksand. Then, Teen throws both of them off the road as well. The episode ends with Teen wearing a blue crown that looks oddly like the red crown Wanda Maximoff wore as the Scarlet Witch.

It seems like Teen is who I originally thought he was, Wanda’s son, Billy, known in the comics as Wiccan. The episode ends with You Should See Me In A Crown by Billie Eilish. Between the crown and the fact the song was sung by a musician named Billie ties in nicely with this character.

The reveal leads to so many questions. If this is Wiccan, how did he get here? The last time Marvel fans saw Wiccan in this universe, he was a magical creation of Wanda and was left in the Hex. Also, if Wiccan made it to the real world, where is his twin brother Tommy, also known as Speed. Is Tommy why he’s on the Witches’ Road? Also, is there a connection between Wiccan and Rio? Both showed up as Agatha was starting to recognize an issue with the spell she was under. Wiccan claimed to have broken her free while Rio says she was able to find her? Are they working together? Or do they have separate reasons for seeking out Agatha? So many questions and I love where every bit of this is going. The last four episodes should be fun.
