If I Can't Reach You/Let My Song Teach You
The witches must continue down the road following the death of Sharon/Mrs. Hart in the latest episode of the Marvel and Disney+ Original Series, Agatha All Along. Along the way, they summon a new green witch and perform the most famous version of the Witches’ Road song.
New Green Witch
The death of Sharon Davis/Mrs. Hart leaves the coven shaken. Neither Jennifer, Lilia, Alice or the Teen have previously walked the road. It heightens their distrust in Agatha while placing blame on each other for the death of this woman who clearly didn’t want to go on this journey. The rest of the coven overrules Agatha and insists they summon a new green witch to the scene. Once the spell is cast, Rio Vidal claws her way through the ground.
Rio makes it clear she’s not just a “green witch” but is THE “green witch.” However, there are plenty of hints that she isn’t what she seems. She accompanies them down the road as they prepare for the next trial which tackles music and fire.
Alice’s trial
The next house and the next trial presents itself, scaring Alice who wants nothing to do with it, but the Witches’ Road has other plans. They enter the house and are transformed into 1970s clothing that Teen comments looks like an album cover. (He’s also not wrong. It reminded me of Daisy Jones and the Six, but other bands could work there too.) The coven quickly realizes they have been cursed when Lilia and Jennifer both experience burning. Agatha and Alice come to the conclusion they must play the Witches’ Road song that Alice’s mother popularized.
Agatha sings, Alice plays piano, Teen plays guitar, Rio plays drums, Jennifer plays bass and Lilia plays the zills. The band performs the hit ballad that defeats the curse. They also understand that Alice’s mother performed the song as a protection spell to keep Alice safe from the curse. The piano opens for them to move on down the road, but Teen collapses from a glass shard in his abdomen from the attack. The coven must rush to save him before losing someone else along the Witches’ Road.
Teen and Scars
After escaping the house, Jennifer performs a spell to save Teen’s life. Meanwhile, Agatha tells the coven “don’t” when they bring up his youth and then softly asks “don’t?” to Rio. Jennifer casts a spell to heal his wound, and Agatha keeps watch as he wakes up. They discuss the stichel that prevents him from telling his name. Agatha claims she didn’t cast it and then reveals that even if she did, she wouldn’t know and that it can’t be removed, only broken.
Once they heal his wound, the witches discuss their scars with most of the coven showing physical scars. However, Rio talks about how a person is her scar as she had to perform a job against someone she loved. This hints at a larger relationship between Agatha and Rio but also causes Agatha to leave the group.
Rio and Agatha share a tender moment before Rio says the Teen “isn’t yours” to Agatha. This leads to a cold moment before Agatha walks off. It’s clear Rio is addressing Agatha’s belief that Teen is her son, but the comment is ambiguous. It could mean that he isn’t the son she allegedly gave up for the Darkhold. It could also mean that he is the son she gave up, but he isn’t hers anymore. Which does Rio mean? We have five more episodes to find out.
Who is Rio?
Rio’s first appearance since episode two raises some more questions about who she is. She claimed to be THE Green Witch, which would make her Gaea. While that’s certainly possible, Agatha’s actions hint that Rio may be Death. Her discussion of taking people into the ground connects to both. Plus, given the way this series is building, it makes me wonder if she’s an agent of Mephisto. Mephisto has already been name dropped and there seems to be a lot of connection between Agatha, her son and Rio.
Rating
This episode had many elements I truly loved, but it didn’t connect with me the way episodes two and three did. I don’t know if I wanted more Debra Jo Rupp or if there’s another reason, but I just wasn’t into this episode. It wasn’t bad. The musical performance was solid. The story makes sense. Everything it’s doing is done well, it just didn’t hit with me. I have no complaints, but I can’t say I would tell people to watch this episode for how great this series can be. It’s still solid.
